Hair transplantation candidates, should be assessed and analyzed by doctors who specialized
in Hair Surgery.
Hair transplantation consultation begins with the history of hair loss and general health of
the patient.
The beginning of the hair loss, the rate, the pattern, inciting factors, family history of hair
loss should be questioned. Medically treatable causes should be detected.
Previous treatments for hair loss; shampoos, minoxidil, finasteride, mesotherapy, Platelet
Rich Plasma PRP, Scalp Micropigmentation SMP and previous hair surgeries are recorded.
About general health status of the patient, chronic diseases (DM, cardiac problems),
previous surgeries, local anesthesia application, medication use, dermatologic problems,
allergies, must be recorded.
Hair form and texture ( straight, wavy, curly), hair color, thickness of hair, scalp color
(white, dark, red) should be taken into consideration. Thick, curly, and black hair has more
coverage potential than thin, straight, and blonde hair. Patients who have an equal number of
thick, wavy hair follicles versus fine, straight follicles will have equal growth of
transplanted hair but a very different perception of density. Those with thicker caliber
follicles may appear to have 50 - 100% more hair than those with thin, straight hair.
Thin hairs has the advantage of more natural look after hair transplantation. In thin haired
patients, if available, graft number should be increased and more densely packed.
In preoperative asssessment and analysis, the extent and pattern of the hair loss, the
condition and structure of the present hair, the density of the donor area should be
identified.
Graft number to be transplanted, which is suitable or possible for the individual patient is
determined.
In patients who have limited hair loss (just frontal or just crown for eg) suitable and
sufficient number of grafts can be done in most of the cases.
In patients who have extensive hair loss, as much as possible number of grafts can be done
according to the density of the donor area. The donor areas density is the limiting factor in
these patients. Also the patients chief cosmetic concern is the frontal scalp, the vertex, or
both should be determined. Another important issue to discuss is where to transplant hair
and how many procedures will be needed over time to achieve the patients goals.
The key to success is to establish realistic expectations regarding the perceived density from
a hair transplant.
The planning of the operation, the design and location of the frontal hair line,
recipient site creation should be done by your surgeon.
If a patient requests information before the consultation, he or she directed to my website
and videos at my You Tube channel that reflects the philosophy of Erkut Özdamar MD.
For patients from abroad, a detailed and precise consultation can be done via Whatsapp
(photographic documentation needed). Frontal, rear, top and side views of the patients head
which are taken under normal light, gives us the chance of 90 – 95 % precision in graft
number determination, plan of the surgery, and what to expect from hair transplantion
individually.
The consultation should establish proper candidate selection and realistic expectations of
the patient.
